Beth,
I have copies in our family archives of the Old Pollock Castle , shortly before t was demolished.
Also a Pollock was made “castellan” of Rothes Castle in Scotland, and I have a photo of that.
Also of the Rue des Stuarts in Dol de Bretagne, where we believe circa 1040 the family, who were Bretons originated from. Our ancestor, Fulbert, served at Dol Castle ( shown in the Bayeux Tapestry!), and followed Alain Fitz Flaad- meaning son of Flaad, who ruled the castle of Dol for Prince Arthur of Brittany, as “daipher”or “Seneschal” i.e. Chief Castle guardian), a bitter rival of William of Normandy, until they patched things up, and Bretons were sent to fight the battle of Hastings! Alain FitzFlaad (1078- to after 1121) and his son to the Welsh borders to guard Oswestry castle. From there they followed , the future David I of Scotland when he visited them at Oswestry, During his stayed it is believed he stayed and promised them massive lands in Scotland near Glasgow , Newton Mearns and Upper and Lower Pollock ( the people who live by a pool!”). They first appear to have stayed in Lothian, at Haddington, near Edinburgh, until King David confirmed the grant of lands near Glasgow
“Pollock Halls ( not Hill!) is part of Edinburgh University of course.
Of course several descendants of Fulbert were connected with Paisley Abbey the main Christian centre close to Edinburgh, including Robert Pollock of the boar’s crest and a man with his dog cresst.
Debbie please not that the Pollocks had land confiscated by Robert Bruis , know now as “the Bruce” for supporting Edward Balliol, ( 1283-1367), the Englishman, that Edward I (Hammer of the Scots) wanted as a puppet king.
A coupe of Pollok female descendants married into the new land owners, the Maxwell family, who were given Pollok Park and built Pollok House, named after the land previously owned by Pollocks.
Balgrey House, Newton Mearns is regarded as a Pollock family home in the original Pollock lands , near Paisley. I would send you a phot, if I knew how!
Thank you for the extraordinary job you are doing with this website about our incredible family!
Thanks. Let us know if there’s anything you think we should add.
